Do you know how much wealth your MNA or MPA actually has? Chances are, you don’t, because the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has not published the asset details of legislators since 2021.
Under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017, Members of the National Assembly, Provincial Assemblies, and the Senate are required to submit their statements of assets and liabilities to the ECP every year by December 31. These statements must then be published in the official Gazette, making them part of the public record. Any citizen can obtain copies by paying a prescribed fee. Failure to submit the statements may result in the suspension of a lawmaker’s membership.
Although parliamentarians have continued submitting their annual statements, their publication has been delayed for the financial years 2021–2022, 2022–2023, and 2023–2024.
According to official accounts, the statements for 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 were forwarded to the Printing Corporation of Pakistan for publication, but printing was reportedly delayed due to a paper shortage. For 2023–2024, the ECP has yet to complete the scrutiny of the submitted statements, and it remains unclear whether the scrutiny report will be made public.
