As many as nine national and provincial legislators remain suspended since January 16, 2016 for not submitting their annual assets statements with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the financial year 2024-2025.
Their memberships of the assemblies for which they were elected were suspended in line with the provisions of the Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017.
Nearly 38 percent members of Parliament and Provincial Assemblies had missed the December 1st legal deadline for filing annual declaration of assets and liabilities. Subsequently, the ECP suspended the membership of a total of 159 legislators for not submitting the asset statements on January 16 2026. As many as 150 of them have been restored as members after they filed the statements of assets and liabilities over last 26 days.
Which parties and assemblies do suspended members belong?
The nine legislators, whose membership has yet to be restored, include two members from the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) and one member each from the Balochistan National Party (BNP), Jamat-e-Islami (JI), Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), an independent, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam Pakistan (JUI-P), and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). As many as one of these legislators belongs to the National Assembly, four to the Sindh Assembly, two to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and one each to the Balochistan Assembly and the Senate of Pakistan.
Whose memberships have been restored?
Party-wise, PML-N had 54 of its legislators restored. This was succeeded by the PPPP with 40 legislators restored, and the independents with 39 restorations. Other parties with restored members include Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) seven, JUI-P three, Awami National Party (ANP) two, Pakistan Muslim League (PML) two, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTIP) Two and PTI one.
In terms of assembly, there were the most restored memberships in the as many as 50 members of Punjab Assembly where 50 legislators were restored. This was succeeded by the National Assembly (31), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly (26), and Sindh Assembly (29). Also, the ECP reinstated membership of eight Senators and six members of the Balochistan Assembly.
