The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has notified the suspension of the membership of 159 legislators including two federal ministers who failed to submit their annual statement of assets and liabilities to the Commission before the January 15, 2026 as required under Section 137 of the Elections Act 2017.

How many members have been suspended?

Out of a total membership of 1,181 lawmakers across Parliament and the four provincial assemblies, 159 members missed the second deadline to submit their statements of assets and liabilities by January 15, 2026. This constitutes nearly 13 percent of all the legislators.

The suspended members include 50 Punjab MPAs (13 percent of total membership of the Assembly), 33 Sindh MPAs (20 percent), 32 MNAs (20 percent), 28 KP MPAs (19 percent), nine Senators (nine percent), and seven Balochistan MPAs (11 percent).

Which parties do suspended members belong to?

The members from ten political parties have been suspended for non-compliance with the legal requirement of submitting their annual statements of assets and liabilities to the Election Commission.

A total of 55 members of Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N) were suspended for not submitting their statements. As many 41 members belonging to Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP), eight to Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P), four to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan (JUI-P), and 42 independent members including those backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) did not submit the required statements.

In addition, two members each from the Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Muslim League (PML), and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTIP), as well as one member each from the Balochistan National Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), and the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), did not file their annual statements of assets and liabilities.

Those whose memberships have been suspended include Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training, and the Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination.

The legal status of the cabinet portfolios held by the suspended ministers during the period of suspension, as well as the validity of decisions made during that time, remains unclear.
